I was in an auto accident, what's the best way to handle, insurance or lawyers?

I do have whiplash and my car's frame is bent in 2 places. I've heard horror stories about car frames that have been bent, that the car will never be the same. I asked my ins. claim agent about if I did have the car repaired and it wasn't corrected what are my options, I was told I could sell it private party….wrong answer!!!!!
